After a Monday with the last “tails” of the storm that arrived last weekend, this Tuesday the weather is stable to say goodbye to the year without precipitation and without dense and persistent fog, according to forecasts from State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) for this December 30.
For this Tuesday, the AEMET activated a yellow warning for fogs that could be icy, a type of fog where droplets of liquid water instantly freeze when they touch cold surfaces and create a layer of ice that we call frost, in the areas of the Salamanca Plateau, Valladolid, Zamora, the Guadiana-Badajoz Plain, Barros and Serena de Badajoz, the Tagus and Alagón-Cáceres, the Cáceres Plateau and the center of Lugo.
This freezing fog, which will persist for most of the day, will be one of the consequences of the anticyclone that will persist from this Tuesday, which will also leave clear skies, drops in temperatures and a disappearance of precipitation, except in the Cantabrian Sea and in the Balearic Islands, where they could occur occasionally.
Light and abundant cloudiness is also expected on the Atlantic and Cantabrian slopes, on the Ebro and in the northeast depressions, a sky that will tend to be overcast throughout the day in the far north of the peninsula. In the Canary Islands, stable weather is expected, with a predominance of slightly cloudy skies, but cloudy intervals in the interior of the mountainous islands.
Drop in temperatures across much of the peninsula
As for temperatures, they are expected to decrease in the Cantabrian Sea and in areas of the northern peninsula where fog will be persistent, while they will increase in the southern half of the eastern facade and with little change in the rest. Thus, it will reach 21 degrees in Gran Canaria, 20 in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, 18 degrees in Alicante or 17 in Almería, Ceuta, Melilla, Murcia or Valencia.
Regarding minimum temperatures, a general drop is expected, especially in the southern plateau and the eastern third of the peninsula, with an increase in the Cantabrian Sea and little change in the rest. It will reach -2 degrees in Soria or León and -1 in the main capitals of Castilla y León. In fact, in areas like Zamora, Palencia or Valladolid, the maximum temperature of 5 degrees will barely be reached, with intense cold that will dominate the last days of the year in this area. There will also be frost in mountainous areas and in the north and center of the peninsula.
As for the wind, it will generally blow light, with a predominance of southern and eastern components in the Canary Islands and from the north and west in the peninsula and the Balearic Islands, with probable strong intervals and very strong gusts, the Tramuntana in Ampurdán.
Weather on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Eve
For New Year’s Eve, Aemet currently forecasts stable and cold weather, without rain, but with frost in much of the north, center and east, with fog that will continue to be dense and persistent in valley and plateau areas.
In fact, for New Year’s Eve cold temperatures are expected, dropping below zero in capitals like Albacete, Ávila, Burgos, Cuenca, León, Lleida, Pamplona, Salamanca, Segovia, Soria, Teruel or Vitoria, and on Thursday also in Logroño, Madrid, Lugo or Toledo.
