Dissatisfied with Father Júlio Lancellotti, the vice-mayor of São Paulo, Colonel Mello Araújo, says he defends freedom of expression, but understands that the right of a religious person to demonstrate must follow the rules of the Church
“I am in favor of freedom of expression. His case is different, he answers to the Church and there are rules,” he said.
By order of the Archbishop of São Paulo, Dom Odilo Scherer, the priest is prohibited from doing live performances and preaching online, which has caused unrest among his supporters.
The colonel did not wish to comment directly on the Church’s decision. “The Church knows what it is doing. It is a serious, old institution, with rules. I am Catholic. They must certainly have their reasons,” he says.
In March, the MP criticized the priest on social networks and blamed him for the emergence of a new cracolândia in the Belenzinho district, east of the capital.
