The Verum in Numbers report, from the Public Ministry of the Federal District and Territories (MPDFT), indicates that in addition to the reduction in the number of homicides committed in the federal capital in recent years, there has also been a decrease in the use of firearms in this type of crime.
“Some data attract attention. There is, in this historic series, a proportional reduction in the number of homicides in which a firearm was used. So that in 2023 more crimes were committed with knives and other objects than with firearms, a reversal of what had happened until then. This probably indicates that the Federal District Police have succeeded in combating firearm possession and delinquency in general”, he declared to Metropolises the Jury and Defense coordinator of the Life Court Center, Raoni Maciel.
The 4th edition of Verum in Numbers, published this week by the MPDFT, analyzed data relating to intentional homicide investigations opened between 2019 and 2023.

The first Public Security Directory of the Federal District, published by the Secretariat of Public Security (SSP) in June 2025, showed an increase in the number of cases of bodily injury resulting in death by stab wounds last year. According to the directory, in 2024, the DF recorded 207 homicides, including 94 (45%) committed with knives. The MPDFT report now shows that this is a fact that has already happened in previous years.
Convictions
During this period, of the homicides reported and tried, 70% were convicted. In the case of qualified homicides and femicides, the rate exceeds 80%. “We monitor throughout the process, which allows us to present transparency to society on how the criminal justice system handled crimes,” informed the prosecutor.
Maciel stressed that the drop in the number of assassinations within the DF, from 800 victims in 2012 to 200, “is very impressive”. “This indicates a rate of approximately 7 homicides per 100,000 inhabitants, comparable to the safest countries in the world,” he cited.
Femicides
The data indicates that there has been a proportional decrease in the use of firearms in homicides. The coordinator of the Jury Center and Defense of Judicial Life of the MPDFT stressed that this indicates “a progressive prevalence of crimes committed due to intersubjective conflicts”, as is the case of feminicides.
For Maciel, the fight against homicides and feminicides that still occur requires global work, which also involves the population.
“We must understand that there is a task that is not limited to the criminal justice system: we must combat the culture of violence that permeates our society,” he said.
Regions with the highest incidence
The report also shows which administrative regions recorded the most cases of homicides.
Ceilândia leads the total volume of investigations, from 2019 to 2023, with 303 cases, followed by Brasília, with 153.
