“Pride and Prejudice,” Jane Austen’s best-known work, was published in 1813, four years before her death. The novel tells the story of Elizabeth Bennet and Mr. Darcy – a humble young woman and a wealthy man who, despite their different natures, fall madly in love – and inspired films with similar titles. The first, in 1940, with Greer Garson and Laurence Olivier, directed by Robert Z. Leonard. The second in 2005, with Keira Knightley and Matthew MacFadyen, directed by Joe Wright.

Released in 1811, “Sense and Sensibility” was the first book published by Austen who, at the time, used the pseudonym “Lady.” The work addresses the contrast between sisters Elinor and Marianne Dashwood, the former being very rational, while the latter is emotional and passionate. In the cinema, both were played by Emma Thompson and Kate Winslet, in 1995, under the direction of Ang Lee.

Considered one of Jane Austen’s best books, “Emma” was first published in 1815. The work tells the story of Emma Woodhouse, a rich, witty, intelligent and beautiful young woman who believes herself to be more sagacious than she actually is. The book inspired films such as “The Precious Girls of Beverly Hills” (1995) and has gotten more historically accurate versions, the first from 1996, starring Gwyneth Paltrow, and the most recent in 2020, starring Anya Taylor-Joy and directed by Autumn de Wilde.

“Northanger Abbey” was written between 1798 and 1799, but published posthumously in 1817. The book tells, in parody form, the story of Catherine Morland, a young woman who, influenced by Gothic novels – very popular at the time – fantasizes her own life full of dark adventures, in old castles. The young girl, however, is confronted with reality when she is invited to spend time at Northanger Abbey, the residence of a wealthy family. In the cinema, the protagonist was played by Felicity Jones in a film of the same name, released in 2007 and directed by Jon Jones.

“Persuasion” was the last novel written by Jane Austen, in 1816, just after “Emma”. Published in 1818, a year after the author’s death, the work revolves around Anne Elliot, a young woman who fell in love with a humble man – named Frederick Wentworth – but was convinced by her family not to marry him. Seven years later, the two meet again and Anne realizes that she still loves him, even though she knows he is committed to someone else. Adapted to film in 2022, the story starred Dakota Johnson and directed by Carrie Cracknell.
