The CBF published on Monday evening (16/12), the new regulations and the new table of the Brasileirão 2026. In addition to detailing the matches and field orders of the championship until the 38th day, the document also brings new changes to the rules of transfer and classification of players for the Libertadores da América 2027.
Until 2025, the Brasileirão gave the right to four direct places in the Libertadores group stage and two places in the preliminary phase of the competition. In the new format, which will come into force from 2026, the championship will only rank the top five in the continental tournament.
In this way, the former G-6 will become G-5, with four direct places in the Libertadores group stage and one place in the preliminary phase of the competition. The other place in the preliminary phase of the tournament will be reallocated to the Copa do Brasil.
As a result, the regulations maintain the National Cup champion with direct access to the Libertadores group stage, while the runner-up will be placed in the preliminary phase of the tournament.
Discover the new distribution of vacant positions at Libertadores:
- Brazilian: four top-ranked teams gain direct access to the Libertadores group stage; 5th place will have a place in the Pre-Libertadores.
- Brazilian Cup: the champion wins a direct place in the group stage of the Libertadores; the finalist will have access to the Pre-Libertadores.
In the player transfer rule, the limit of matches an athlete can play to change teams in the 2026 Brasileirão has been increased from six to 12 matches.
Until 2025, a player could only transfer to another team if he had played a maximum of six matches for another Brasileirão team. In 2026, an athlete will be able to change clubs if they have played up to 12 matches for another team.
