The doctors treating Jair Bolsonaro (PL) plan to subject the former president to a procedure to control his hiccups, in addition to the hernia correction operation already scheduled for Thursday (25).
The information was given by members of the medical team to journalists this Wednesday (24) in front of the DF Star hospital, in Brasilia, where the politician is hospitalized.
“It is planned to carry out an anesthesia procedure, which would be an anesthetic block of the phrenic nerve. An anesthesia of the nerve that innervates the diaphragm. After this hernia operation, we will re-evaluate this situation and see if it is appropriate to carry out this anesthetic block, which is a relatively safe procedure, but which is not the standard for the treatment of hiccups. We really have to see if it justifies the benefit, the risk”, said doctor Claudio Birolini.
He explained that this is not a surgical procedure and will not be performed in conjunction with the hernia operation. “If we do this anesthetic block procedure, it will possibly be done at the beginning of the week,” he said.
The doctor also said that the new surgery cannot be performed laparoscopically, a less invasive technique than the traditional one, due to previous operations that Bolsonaro has already undergone. He is expected to be hospitalized for five to seven days after the operation.
The former president frequently undergoes medical procedures due to the stabbing he suffered during the 2018 election campaign. In April this year, for example, the politician underwent a 12-hour operation to clear an intestinal obstruction.
Bolsonaro underwent a series of pre-operative examinations throughout Wednesday. The medical team said that after analyzing the tests, it was found that the former president is fit to undergo surgery.
The information was made official in a medical bulletin released shortly after the team members’ statement.
“Former President Jair Messias Bolsonaro was admitted to undergo bilateral inguinal herniorrhaphy. He underwent preoperative examinations, with assessment of cardiological and surgical risks, and was deemed suitable for the proposed intervention. The operation will take place tomorrow (25), starting at 9 a.m., under general anesthesia, and is expected to last 4 hours,” the document states.
“The need for the anesthetic phrenic nerve block procedure will be assessed during hospitalization, depending on the postoperative course and clinical condition,” the bulletin specifies. Doctors say Bolsonaro is expected to spend about an hour and a half to two hours recovering from the anesthesia.
Also a member of the team treating Bolsonaro, Brasil doctor Ramos Caiado said the politician was a little depressed and quite anxious.
“The president is a little depressed about the situation he’s going through, quite anxious. The anxiety leads to recurring hiccups that disrupt his sleep. He’s very uncomfortable with that,” Caiado said.
“In his case, this is exacerbated because he already has a bit of depression and anxiety beforehand. This is only exacerbated by the pre-operative worry, which is natural for anyone his age, 70,” the doctor explained.
Bolsonaro’s operation had to be authorized by STF (Supreme Federal Court) Minister Alexandre de Moraes, as the former president is serving time after being convicted in the coup process.
The politician left the Federal Police Superintendency earlier on Wednesday to go to the hospital. His wife, Michelle Bolsonaro, and his children Flávio, Carlos Jair Renan and Laura are allowed to visit him while he is hospitalized, but without carrying cell phones or other electronic devices.
