At least 11 people were killed in a shooting on Sunday at Sydney’s Bondi Beach, one of Australia’s most popular beaches celebrating a Jewish holiday. Authorities described the act as “terrorist” and “anti-Semitic.”
US President Donald Trump on Sunday condemned the attack on a Jewish holiday in Sydney that killed 11 people, calling it a “purely anti-Semitic” act. “It was a terrible attack,” the US president said during a Christmas party at the White House.
“The United States strongly condemns the terrorist attack in Australia that targeted a Jewish celebration,” U.S. diplomatic chief Marco Rubio said Sunday after the Sydney beach shooting that left 11 people dead.
“Anti-Semitism has no place in this world. Our prayers are with the victims of this terrible attack, the Jewish community and the people of Australia,” the US Secretary of State continued in X.
Emergency services transported 29 injured people to area hospitals, New South Wales Police reported.
One of the suspects in the attack has died and the second is in critical condition, police added. Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said in a televised address that it was “a targeted attack on Australian Jews” on the first day of Hanukkah, a holiday known as the Festival of Lights that should have been “a day of joy, a celebration of faith.”
