Traffic dynamics in a key sector of the city will change again starting today as the railroad crossing at 44th Avenue and 1st Street is completely closed and repair work on the railroad tracks begins. Municipal sources confirm that the work will take about three weeks. Therefore, mandatory detours are introduced to organize traffic in an area where a significant flow of vehicles is concentrated every day.
According to the established scheme, those traveling along 44th Avenue towards 1st Street must turn along diagonal 80 and then return to 44th Avenue. Meanwhile, vehicles traveling on 1st Street can only turn right toward 80th Diagonal. For drivers and motorcyclists needing access to the La Plata Hippodrome grounds, the only activated option is 115th Street.
The municipality urged drivers passing through the area to exercise extreme caution, respect the temporary signage installed and follow the instructions of personnel affected by the action. They also pointed out that these measures are necessary to ensure traffic safety during the duration of the works being carried out in an important connecting corridor between the urban area and various neighborhoods in the west of La Plata.
WHAT HAPPENS TO THE UNIVERSITY TRAIN?
In this context, we will have to wait and see what will happen to the route of the university train, since it departs from lines 1 and 44 towards the forestry faculties and the tracks it uses are the ones that will intervene.
One possibility that has been considered by users is for the route to start and end at a station before reaching 1 and 44, the Architecture station, at 47th Street.
It should be noted that students and teachers are currently completing the semester and annual subjects, so there is still movement in the academic units.
The municipality and the company that manages the tram corridor have not yet provided any official information about the measure that will be taken for the university railway.
THE STEP OF 1 AND 38
The announcement of the diversion on lines 1 and 44 comes shortly after another nerve center of local transport returned to normality. After several weeks of restrictions and diversions, level crossings 1 and 38 were finally opened in both directions on Friday November 28, news celebrated by motorists who have endured almost a month of long delays, particularly at peak times.
The area was intervened as part of the final phase of widening works on Diagonal 74, which stretches from Plaza Alsina to roundabouts 120 and 32. In November, those who needed to travel to the center of La Plata or Barrio Hipódromo and Ensenada were forced to use alternative roads, which were also congested due to increased traffic. Neighbors and users repeatedly expressed their discomfort about the traffic jams observed on the main traffic arteries 1, 38 and 122.
Although it was initially expected that the work would only take two weeks, the work took twice as long and traffic was only restored on the last Friday of November, restoring traffic flow in a corridor that also serves as an entrance and exit route to the Buenos Aires-La Plata highway, making its operation strategically important for the entire region.
The contrast between the recent approval of the crossing at junctions 1 and 38 and the renewed closure at junctions 44 and 1 once again presents motorists with a scenario of constant adjustments in the local road network.
However, those who will carry out the track improvement works emphasize that these interventions are part of a comprehensive improvement plan aimed at reducing risks, optimizing railway infrastructure and improving road safety.
In the meantime, users will need to incorporate new routes (see graphic), expect delays and pay attention to signage and official notices as December begins with important changes to city transport, particularly in sectors where central access and regional connections converge.
