The darkness on the banks of the Paraná River appeared to provide sufficient cover for the movement of traffickers, who secretly advanced in a boat near the shore. The smugglers did not know that at that time they were being watched by a prefectural patrol, which, thanks to night vision goggles, had clearly located the suspects as they threw packages ashore. The uniformed officers were then able to forestall the drug traffickers who had chosen this area in the mission city of Monte Carlo as a drug storage location. The seizure involved 450 kilos of marijuana.
“The incident occurred when personnel carrying out a reserved patrol detected, using a night vision monocular, the crossing of a rowing boat from Paraguay. The cargo moved towards the Argentine coast with several packages and landed at kilometer 1790 of the Paraná River, in the natural port of Kimich. Faced with the maneuver, the National Maritime Authority immediately deployed land and river assets towards the sector. Upon arrival, officers carried out a search during which “25 packages were found scattered among the vegetation on the river bank,” the prefecture reported in a press release.
This text added that “packages containing a brownish vegetable substance were found in the bags, which gave a positive result for drugs in an orientation test.”
Authorities have estimated the value of the shipment at $1,644,690,000, “a figure that shows the strong economic blow to the criminal organizations operating in the region,” the prefecture stressed.
