The president of the PT, Edinho Silva, said this Tuesday (9) that no one takes seriously the recently launched candidacy of Senator Flávio Bolsonaro (PL-RJ) for the Presidency of the Republic after the son of former president Jair Bolsonaro (PL) admitted the possibility of backing down a day after the announcement.
Edinho even made fun of the situation, saying that Flávio had negotiated badly, because he should have bought more time to arrive at the negotiating table in better conditions. Despite this assessment, the PT deputy admitted that, in a politically polarized environment, the right-wing candidate would win more than 30% of the country’s votes.
“No one presents himself as a candidate one day and the next day opens it to negotiation. I have never seen this in my life in 40 years of political activism. It is not possible to take it seriously. There is still a lot to do,” Edinho said.
During the breakfast with journalists, Edinho refused to specify who would be the ideal opponent of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) in the next elections.
“It doesn’t matter if the opponent will be Flávio or anyone else. Whoever the opponent comes, he will capitalize on part of this polarization. He arrives with more than 30% of the votes. Unless it is a very fragile leadership,” he admitted.
Still explaining why the party omitted Flávio’s name in its resolution and designated Tarcísio as the main right-wing interlocutor, Edinho said that Tarcísio wants to occupy the role of leader of the far right, which he believes is fascist-inspired.
“I don’t know if Tarcísio will be a candidate for the presidency of the Republic. What Tarcisio occupies today and continues to occupy is being the leader of this more extreme right camp. He makes it a point of honor to characterize himself as the heir of the ultra right,” Edinho said, adding that Tarcísio is the one who mobilized the governors to distort the anti-faction project.
Asked about possible successors to Lula within the PT, Edinho said that today the biggest national leader of the PT after the president is the Minister of Finance, Fernando Haddad. According to Edinho, Haddad gained visibility when he gained national exposure during the 2018 presidential race.
“What is undeniable is that Fernando Haddad is a national leader of the PT and the second name of the PT. This is factual. If he must be accredited to succeed President Lula, the answer will come by 2030.”
Besides Haddad, Edinho cited other names, such as that of the former governor of Ceará and Minister of Education, Camilo Santana.
Speaking about the possible names for the election to the government of São Paulo, the PT president recalled having already mentioned Haddad himself and also said that Vice President Geraldo Alckmin could decide “to be what he wants.”
The PT president also said the party would not give up on defending the creation of a Ministry of Public Security, even if this is not necessarily an option for a coalition government.
Edinho defended the President of the Central Bank, Gabriel Galípolo, although he affirms that the need to reduce interest rates constitutes a consensus within the PT. “I have confidence in Galípolo. In terms of fighting inflation, he has achieved important results.”
Edinho also preached maturity for institutional reorganization. According to him, we must correct this institutional disarray that the country is going through.
Regarding the controversy surrounding the appointment of the Prime Minister of the AGU (Attorney General of the Union), Jorge Messias, to the STF (Federal Supreme Court), Edinho said that “the appointment of the Minister of the STF is the constitutional responsibility of the Head of Executive. And that’s it.”
