Moroccan police arrested eight people in several cities on suspicion of “illegal speculation” on tickets for matches of the African Cup of Nations (CAN), which is taking place in the country, the local press reported on Tuesday. According to a police source cited by the Hespress website, “computer surveillance services” detected publications on social networks offering the resale of tickets “at prices much higher than their value”, in “violation of the law”, which motivated the police operation.

The opening match of the African Cup of Nations (CAN) on Sunday between Morocco and the Comoros (2-0 victory for the local team) was sold out, but only 60,180 people were present, leaving 9,320 seats empty at the Moulay Abdellah stadium in Rabat. This sparked indignation and surprise on social networks.
Morocco is hosting the 35th edition of the African Cup of Nations (CAN) from December 21 to January 18. In 2030, the kingdom will become the second African country to host a World Cup, twenty years after South Africa. The tournament will be co-hosted with Spain and Portugal.
