Argentine football has a new monarch. Estudiantes de La Plata won the title of the 2025 Clausura tournament this Saturday after defeating Racing Club in a dramatic 12-leg final in Santiago del Estero. The team led by Eduardo Domínguez is delighted with winning a new trophy, a triumph that, however, is causing repercussions and some concern in the context of the race for the 2029 FIFA Club World Cup in Boca and River.
The meeting was lively and full of emotions until the last second. Adrián Martínez scored the first goal with a great goal that put Racing in the lead. But Pincha didn’t give up: in the last game of regular time, the experienced Guido Carrillo seemed to score the equalizer and force extra time, which ended with the irrefutable 1-1. The definition has been moved to penalties.
Although goalkeepers Facundo Cambeses and Fernando Muslera managed to save a shot each, Facundo Pardo failed decisively, meaning victory and Estudiantes being crowned new champions.
A new illusion in sight
The recent consecration of Estudiantes not only means local glory for Pincharrata, but also has a direct impact on the fight for a place in the 2029 Club World Cup.
By winning the title, León from La Plata secures his participation in the Copa Libertadores 2026, giving him an important platform to collect the necessary points in the CONMEBOL rankings and aim for the second edition of this global tournament.
This is how the points system works
The points system is crucial: the simple classification as Libertadores already brings 3 points. Each victory in the continental tournament brings 3 additional units. Draws result in 1 point.
For each advanced phase, 3 more points are added, promoting a deep campaign.
Currently, thanks to its excellent work in 2025, Racing is at the top of the Argentine teams in this table with a total of 35 points after reaching the semi-finals. However, last night’s result in Santiago del Estero pushes him out of the 2026 edition of the Libertadores. They will therefore not be able to achieve more points, at least this year.
Immediately behind, although not too far behind, is Estudiantes with now 31 units. Then follow Vélez 24 and River 23.
Other relegated teams in the rankings are Central Córdoba 16 and Talleres 7.
For its part, Boca starts with just 3 points but should start improving positions this year as it has already secured its place in the next edition of the Copa Libertadores.
