Businessman Elon Musk on Saturday called for the European Union to be “abolished” after he denounced that its bureaucratic system was “slowly strangling Europe to death” in comments he made a day after the European Commission announced a €120 million fine on his social network X for the “misleading design” of the blue verification tick on its account.
In a long series of individual messages published over the past few hours, Musk considered the fine an attack by Brussels against freedom of expression and a bad example of supranational sovereignty against the interests of its member states.
Musk expressed his regret after the fine imposed on his platform: “The best way to discover who the bad guys are is to find out who wants to restrict freedom of expression.” It must be remembered that this blue mark is considered a seal of authenticity by users even though access to it is discretionary, which violates the obligations of the European Digital Services Act (DSA).
The penalty announced by Brussels also responds to other offenses punishable by the DSA, such as a lack of transparency in its advertising repository and failure to comply with its obligation to allow researchers access to data.
The European Commission “worships the god of bureaucracy and stifles the people of Europe,” Musk said in his brief series of messages. “EU bureaucracy is slowly strangling Europe to death,” he insisted.
For this reason, he reiterated that “the European Union must be abolished and sovereignty returned to individual countries, so that governments can better represent their people,” in a message that ended up being posted to the header of his account and, therefore, the first that his approximately 230 million followers would read.
This series of letters was welcomed by Eurosceptics such as the Prime Minister of Hungary, Viktor Orbán, who took the opportunity to denounce the fine imposed by the European Commission as an attack on freedom of expression.
The committee’s attack concluded, “Hats off to Elon Musk for defending the front.”
