
The passage of storm Emilia in Tenerife left a layer of snow of one and a half meters thick in Teide National Park, a snowfall that has not been seen on the island since 2016. Additionally, on site, thermometers reached up to -4ºC.
The snow thus covered the entire Ucanca valley, in addition to the mountains of Arico, Arafo and Güimar, according to the Cabildo de Tenerife, which organized a special operation for snowfallwith more than a dozen soldiers, to reopen the access roads to Teide when conditions are right.
The president, Rosa Dávila, indicated that the main objective is to guarantee the safety and protection of all residents of Tenerife This is why all necessary means are coordinated “with the greatest caution”.
During the passage of the storm, there were a total of 584 related incidents with the action of strong wind. The incidents recorded come, for the most part, from the action of the wind, with actions linked to the fall and removal of trees, fences, street lamps and street furniture, as well as obstacles on the road network, without any serious incident or injury having been recorded.
The wind also caused Specific delays and diversions at Tenerife North Airportalthough without major incidents and maritime transport remained operational.
The storm also brought wind gusts of up to 159 km/h to Izaña, as well as to values of 109 km/h in Candelaria and Las Cañadas. Sustained winds also exceeded 60 km/h in central areas and accumulated precipitation exceeded 69 liters per square meter in Arico and notable records also in Güímar and Arafo.
