Actor Emílio de Mello will replace José de Abreu in the role of a morbidly obese gay professor in the São Paulo season of the play “The Whale.” The production, which adapts the text by the American Samuel D. Hunter, will debut at the Teatro Sabesp Frei Caneca on January 23 next year.
Directed and translated by Luís Artur Nunes, the play also stars Luisa Thiré, Gabriela Freire, Eduardo Speroni and a special appearance by Alice Borges.
“A Baleia” was created in June this year as part of a project led by Nunes and José de Abreu.
The actor will, however, have to leave the stage due to other professional commitments. He will star in a new Netflix series, alongside Marieta Severo, Nanda Costa and Alice Wegmann.
On stage, Abreu used fillers and makeup to portray the character, the same resources Mello will use in the São Paulo season.
In 2022, the text of “The Whale” gave birth to the film of the same name by Darren Aronofsky, which won Brendan Fraser the Oscar for best actor, in the role of the protagonist Charlie, a teacher who goes through a process of self-destruction through food. Between traumas linked to religion and the loss of a great love, the character wishes, before dying, to get closer to his daughter, from whom he was separated.
