The return of Emily in Paris has brought an unexpected plot twist: the protagonist, played by Lily Collins, has left the French capital to settle in Rome, where she takes over the management of the new office of the Agence Grateau.
This change of scenery, which occurred with the premiere of season five on Netflix, represents progress in both his professional and personal life Emily Cooperwho has apparently found emotional support with Marcello, the heir to the Moraturi family empire.
Collins herself explained this in a press conference to introduce the series, in which she highlighted the development of her character: “She has tried to find her own voice throughout the series Philippine Leroy Beaulieu) gets closer to her and that helps her in matters of inner trust.”

The series that was created by Darren Star (responsible for “megahits” that take us through all decades: from attitude to life To Sex in New York) expands its universe beyond Paris to the cities of Rome and Venice, without completely abandoning the French capital.
This new approach allows us to explore not only Emily’s transformation, but also the stories of other key characters such as Sylvie and Mindy in a context shaped by fashion and personal desires. Emily’s inner changes are reflected in her locker room: Now she opts for less flashy and more fitted garments, although the visual spectacle is still there. “She knows how to express herself in a different way, and the boldness and brilliance are tempered to create outfits that, while not equally colorful, are just as impactful. They’re just a little more tailored,” Collins says.
The story of Emily in Paris It is not limited to the protagonist. Sylvie, played by Philippine Leroy-Beaulieu, is also in Rome, motivated both by her relationship with a film director and her desire to attract new clients for the agency. Leroy-Beaulieu has said in statements that the character will show a more vulnerable side: “We’ll see what happens when Sylvie’s armor breaks. It’s interesting that she’s always trying so many things, both romantically and professionally. And that she somehow fails at all of them, which I think is great. I love characters who don’t achieve their goals.”

Mindy for her part (Ashley Park), Emily’s best friend, returns to Paris after her experience as a judge on “Chinese Popstar.” Park has explained that her character, who was the most outspoken and carefree in the first season, now faces greater personal risks: “Later, we saw her give her best in many friendships, and now she has more to lose.”
Darren Star has indicated that the expansion to Italy is in keeping with the intention of offering the viewer a journey through Rome and Venice and integrating these destinations naturally into the storyline. “We wanted the viewer to travel through us to Rome and Venice (which also have a presence). But it was of course the story that should take us to these places, and so it happened. It was a perfect fit because Italy is another utopian place that everyone in the world would like to visit,” Star explained.
The actor Eugenio Franceschiniwho plays Marcello, shares his enthusiasm for showing the beauty of Rome and Venice, cities with personal meaning for him: “I moved to Rome when I was 18 to study at the national film school. And Venice is the most beautiful city in the world, where I want to live and die one day.”
The series’ depiction of Italy is supported by a series of idyllic images and iconic locations, such as the luxurious hotel La Posta Vecchia, former residence of John Paul Gettyor the Palazzo de la Civilità Italiana, where Emily stars in a scene in which she loses her mind over a bag.
The city of Rome is portrayed as a vibrant place full of nightlife and gastronomyespecially pasta, occupy a prominent place. Lily Collins has confessed that she was most impressed by the Venetian gondolas during filming: “I couldn’t believe what I saw. How beautiful they are, how beautiful that everyone turns up looking so incredible… I didn’t think it would be so overwhelming and I felt like that every day,” said the actress.
