Last week, taverns, researchers and anthropologists present at the Gastronomic Anthropology Congress in Barcelona deplored the loss of identity – while they are not in the life – of so many bars. Bars of all kinds, of a type you don’t want to find in the center of Barcelona, but simply can’t find. The bar where you can enjoy a beer, a coffee, a tapa. Without more aspirations than the noble and the necessary to shelter, gather, send to the user, and decide, to the citizen. So, at the risk of contravening the wise advice of the anthropologist Manuel Delgado (namely: “If you have an authentic bar, don’t tell anyone, you will only be present and it will be ruined”), we will now recommend to you some of these social temples which are the bars of all our lives. Nobody is in the center of Barcelona. Gentrification and tourist service activities are very short-lived. Of course, there are many tourists around this tourist almendra. Aware of them. The following are just a few examples from different areas of the city.
Monterrey
One of the historic buildings that stand in the old village of Sarrià (Major de Sarrià, 68, opposite Foix). Here, we get caught up in chatter; if you stop for a quick coffee; if you chop something that can perfectly turn into food (the scene); drink the first beers on the weekend. Neighborhood people of all kinds (yes, in Sarrià there is a plural population) live and interact in a comfortable and functional place, without more pretension than what they like.
Bodega Pujol
Originally a distributor of wines and spirits, this bar is a place with solera in Cornellà, on Anselm Clavé street, on the corner of Eduard Gibert i Riera street. Between preserves, sausages, pâtés… bottles of all kinds of drinks everywhere, barrels and bottles of wine, in Pujol things are happening. We’re not talking about an imposed vintage scenography, but an atmosphere full of aromas of all life where we talk, discuss, listen to live music… And that’s it, it goes well.
The indomitable
Not all lifelong bars are lifelong. In Horta (Peris i Mencheta, 6), La indomita has been open for just over a year and is essentially a wine bar where you should seek advice from an expert in the field, who will recommend the wine that best suits any of the cortex platillos but a selected menu: from pork leg carpaccio to this sardine corn with smoked butter. A small space, with “agro-claim” decoration, where you can chat, enjoy and, from time to time, attend live shows.
Bodega Montferry
Since its foundation (still in the Sants district, now in the Serra i Arola district, 13) this essential bar has gained square meters while retaining its authentic spirit. Breaks, tantrums, bites (of fricandó, capi pota, candied eggplant, oreja… ¡exquisitos!), tapas and good rolls to enjoy with one of these rats in which the good wife cooks wonderfully with the relaxed atmosphere of the place.
