“Dedicated to those who are in love,” the maestro sings in one of his great songs – although he avoids the term; “Master of life”, he prefers – Eros Ramazzotti, one of the essential voices of Italian pop. He has been singing about love for forty years in the four corners of the planet, a milestone that he is celebrating today with an album in which he surrounded himself with high-level artists like Alicia Keys, Carín León, Lali and Andrea Bocelli and which he will perform live with a world tour that will pass through Barcelona and Madrid in May 2026.
Do you still have the same enthusiasm as when you were 20?
The world has changed, but the love that I have and that everyone has for music cannot change, but only improve, for those of us who have music in our blood. You’re taking him to death, I’d say.
Now that he is talking about the death, in Spain we continue to mourn that of an icon like Robe Iniesta. How would you like to be remembered in music?
I am very sad for his death and I know that Spain is too, because Robe Iniesta left behind such beautiful things… He fought until the last moment. I would like to be remembered for what I gave and what I will give and leave in the future.
“(Spain and Italy) are different from the United States, England or Australia. Without taking anything away from them, we have our own style. He is like Alejandro Sanz, who mixes pop and flamenco, and that’s why he is so loved in Spain.”
Now what he offers us is his latest album. With a nod to the title, what is the most important story of Eros?
An important story is not only the title of a song, but also this 40-year career. 40 years of always very positive responses from my audience.
What do you prefer, releasing new songs into the world or reinterpreting the classics, like on this album?
We would have to do a mix, and even more so if we are talking about people with my experience and my years of career. It’s the best. Because, of course, if we start looking for new ways now, we would find ourselves in a dead end.
“My mother’s last name was Molina, so a little bit of Spain runs through my veins. At first, singing was like an obligation, but then I realized that I really like it, so I continued. What I don’t like so much is not speaking the language very well”
Why is Italian music so fashionable, also in Spain?
It’s just that we are different. I’m talking about these artists who rediscover their roots and renew them with today’s music, but looking to the past. We are different from the United States, England or Australia; Without taking any credit from them, we have our own style. He looks like Alejandro Sanz, who mixes pop and flamenco, and that’s why he is so loved in Spain.
What does singing in Spanish bring you?
My mother’s last name was Molina, so a little bit of Spain runs through my veins. At first it was a bit forced, but then I realized I really liked it, so I continued. What I don’t really like is not speaking the language very well (laughs).
He is an ambassador of romantic music. In this moment of wars, of clashes, is love the only thing that can save us?
Clear. However, it must be genuine, genuine love, and not just for show. This is what those in charge on Earth should convey, but they don’t do it very well.
This has always been the beautiful ragazzo. Was it difficult for you to remove this label?
The truth is that I always cared about it, because the important thing for me was to make good music. Physical appearance changes over time, so it was never important to me.
Now anyone can write a few sentences and create a song with AI. “We are killing creativity.”
Do you think there is ageism in music?
A few days ago, Ornella Vanoni, a great Italian artist, died. She died at the age of 91 and the truth is that she never had problems performing in front of the public. Everyone is a world and is different from others, but I would say it is more a psychological question of oneself. Of course, physically we change and maybe we disappear a little, but the important thing is character, and if you have character, you will live to the end. Moreover, if you focus everything on physical appearance, you will go crazy and your career will end very soon. This was not my case.
Indeed, on the album, he joins young talents like Lali or Carín León.
For me, the key word was respect. That was the most important thing. I felt the effect towards myself, towards an artist who has given a lot over time musically. Carín wants me to sing with him in Latin America! And I’ll invite Lali and Alicia Keys to a concert. Exchanges or collaborations which, I would say, are also a fantastic stimulus for new generations.
“I enjoy my children, my grandson and my animals… My daily life! If you don’t balance the two things, your personal and professional life, you are not living, you are practically dead”
Are you coping with the changes that the industry has undergone in recent years?
The truth is that music changes every day. But seeing that now anyone can write a few sentences and create a song with AI… We are killing creativity. Use technology, but not one hundred percent, only to improve certain ideas. This is the only way to win; Otherwise we all lose, we lose the pleasure of being creative and dreaming. And I don’t want that to happen to me. Relying on technology, especially artificial intelligence, would be a very big problem for future generations.
Eros Ramazzotti
- Known for his characteristic nasal tone, Eros Luciano Walter Ramazzotti (Rome, 62 years old) sold 70 million records throughout his career, which began in 1985 at the Sanremo Festival. He is the author of eternal hits such as “The most beautiful thing”, “If a few songs were enough” or “Fuego en el fuego”.
Is there anything in Eros Ramazzotti’s life that has nothing to do with music?
I enjoy my children, my grandson and my animals… My daily life! When I can, depending on how I manage things, I enjoy my daily life and, at the same time, write songs, tour or promote. If you don’t balance both things, your personal and professional life, you’re not living, you’re basically dead.
