The irregular Chelsea threatened the winning streak of Villa Astonbut saw the Birmingham side come back 2-1 and claim their 11th consecutive victory (for Premier League and Europa League), equaling a series of seven victories since 1910 in the English championship. This excellent phase has fans dreaming of the first English elite title since 1981.
Striker Ollie Watkins came on in the second half and was the name of the game, scoring both goals in Aston Villa’s comeback. Brazilian João Pedro scored for Chelsea in the first half. With 39 points, the team remains in the hunt for leaders Arsenal (42) and Manchester City (40), while Chelsea remains with 29 and leaves the G4. Liverpool have 32.
From the first shot on target, the goal came. At 37, Reece James takes a corner from the left. Aston Villa goalkeeper Dibu Martinez found himself surrounded by players in blue and was unable to intercept the play. Before entering the goal, the ball hit João Pedro. Many went to celebrate with James. Chelsea finished the first half with 10 shots to none for their rival.
The scenario changes in the second half, and Chelsea find their opponents much more incisive. Before the 15th minute, Aston Villa manager Unai Emery made three simultaneous changes, with the introduction of Watkins, Sancho and Onana. The changes took effect quickly and three minutes later Rogers sent Watkins on a rush. He beat the defender in the race, shared it with goalkeeper Sánchez and equalized the match.
Maresca tried to respond with Estêvão, who returned to the game after two weeks of absence due to injury. But it was Watkins who established himself as the name of the game when he headed in Tielemans’ cross in the 39th minute and secured the comeback, Aston Villa’s sixth in the Premier League after failing to score this season. No other team has managed as many comebacks.
On Tuesday, Aston Villa ends 2025 by facing leaders Arsenal at their rival’s stadium in London, while Chelsea host Bournemouth.
