Estudiantes defeated Gimnasia en el Bosque 1-0 and qualified for the final of the Clausura tournament, where they will face Racing on Saturday at 9 p.m. at the Estadio Único Madre de Ciudades in Santiago del Estero.
After eliminating its eternal rival in an exciting definition, Pincha prepares to face the Academy in a duel full of history, from the game in 1967 in which it became champions, to the semi-final of the Copa Libertadores in 1968, to the defunct Intercontinental Champions Super Cup of 1969. More recently, the game in the Pre-Liguilla Pre Libertadores 2015 is remembered.
Estudiantes return to the Único Madre de Ciudades Stadium in Santiago del Estero this Saturday in a national final. In this context, it will be the third time that the dispute for a new title will take place in the Northern Province. The previous ones were against Vélez last year.
On the other side is Gustavo Costas’ team, which has also had a year full of emotions but will try to finish in the best possible way against Barba’s team.
This final between two teams that have been the center of attention in Argentine football due to the championships achieved in recent times will not be just another game but will add to their rich history in defining confrontations.
The first direct duel took place in the 1967 Metropolitano final. On August 6 of the same year, DJs and academics decided the championship in a single game on a neutral court: the old Gasómetro de San Lorenzo. Pincha had just won the semi-final against Platense and the rivals they had to beat to win the first title of the professional era were the team led by Juan José Pizzuti.
That day, the teams from La Plata defeated those from Avellaneda 3-0 with goals from Madero, Verón and Ribaudo and won the championship title. And in this way it became the first team of so-called boys to become champions in professionalism.
After that final and in less than a year, they met again in the Copa Libertadores. They faced each other three times in the semi-finals of the biggest continental tournament and in the last duel, played in River, León with the remembered Chilean Juan Ramón Verón, they beat Racing away after a 1-1 draw and secured a ticket to the final. In that cup game, Estudiantes beat them on goal difference. Then Osvaldo Zubeldía’s side would win the Libertadores after letting Palmeiras away in three games.
As early as 1969, two games were recorded for the Champions Super Cup, stating that this competition was also played by Peñarol and Santos from Brazil. In this edition, Racing finally had its consolation prize after winning the first game 1-0 at the Estudiantes field and drawing the second game goalless at the Presidente Perón Stadium.
46 years later the two faced each other again in the local championship. It was the semi-final of the Pre Libertadores Liguilla, where Estudiantes lost 1-2 on the evening of Avellaneda.
