At least five people were injured this Saturday (27) after an explosion on a speedboat in the sea of Angra dos Reis, on the southern coast of Rio de Janeiro (about 160 km from the capital Rio de Janeiro).
Images shared on social media show the ship engulfed in fire and smoke.
The Angra dos Reis town hall confirmed that the five victims were admitted to the Japuíba municipal hospital. There are two women and three men aged 13 to 29, according to the municipal administration.
One of the patients has already been discharged. He had burns on the lower part of his body. The other injured have health insurance and are waiting to be transferred to other hospital units, the town hall said.
According to the municipal administration, the most serious case is that of a woman who suffered burns on approximately 60% of her body. She remains hospitalized in the ICU (intensive care center).
Two other people — a man and a woman — remain in the surgical clinic, while a teenager receives care in the pediatric department.
“The four patients who remain hospitalized went through the surgical center for debridement, a procedure used to remove dead tissue or blisters resulting from burns,” the town hall said.
Firefighters said they were called to the scene around 12:32 p.m. According to the organization, the five victims were initially taken care of by Samu (Mobile Emergency Care Service).
Firefighters did not provide details on the possible causes of the fire. THE Leaf also questioned the Brazilian Navy about this matter, but did not receive a response until this report was published.
