Popular Party sources have described 2025 as the year in which “the Attorney General fell and in which the Prime Minister should have fallen.” In their statements, they highlight that the recent period has been marked by the detention of figures such as Koldo, Ábalos and Cerdán, as well as various searches of government institutions – including some vice presidents and the PSOE national headquarters – which, in their view, reflects a wave of investigations and interventions related to suspected cases of corruption and mismanagement. This context serves as a framework for the appearance of Alberto Núñez Feijóo, president of the PP, who will take stock of the political course this Monday, December 29, the media reported.
According to the press, Feijóo claims that the legislative period is already “at the end” and insists on the need for the President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, to call general elections so that citizens can go to the polls. This demand has become one of the opposition’s recurring messages and, as the media has detailed, is likely to be a central part of its intervention to journalists planned shortly before the start of the Christmas holidays. The leader of the PP accuses the executive of Pedro Sánchez of having “collapsed” and repeats that the current head of government has “all the corruption registers”.
As the source explained, the popular formation has highlighted that among the most important events of the year is the discovery of “the type of feminism practiced by Paco Salazar’s PSOE”, in which it accuses not only crimes of corruption but also sexual harassment. They also emphasize that 2025 was “the year of suns, chistorras and salads”, an expression used in the PP environment to summarize events, people and controversies in the recent political sphere.
As part of his plans if he reaches government, Feijóo has committed to conducting a comprehensive review of institutions and implementing measures aimed at ensuring transparency. The stated intention is to clarify what the PP calls “the plunder of these years of sanchismo” and to proceed with a complete purge of “the sectarianism and corruption of all institutions,” as recently communicated to the members of the PP National Executive Board. The media say that while Feijóo waits for Pedro Sánchez to “accept his own reality and set a time for his downfall,” Feijóo continues to present to the public the proposals and concrete measures that he intends to implement if he becomes president of the government.
Feijóo’s political analysis comes after the recent regional elections in Extremadura, in which the Popular Party, led by María Guardiola, obtained 43.18% of the vote and obtained 29 seats, compared to the decline of the PSOE, which fell from 28 to 18 seats and obtained 25.72% of the vote. According to the media, Feijóo interpreted these results as a prelude to a “domino effect” in other municipalities such as Aragon, Castile and León and Andalusia, noting that this phenomenon will tend to be repeated throughout the country in future general elections, under the premise that “change is underway” and responds to social activation.
Feijóo’s judicial agenda also marks the beginning of 2025. The media reports that after the Christmas break, on October 29, 2024, the president of the PP will have to testify as a witness before the judge in charge of investigating the management of DANA (Isolated Depression at High Levels). The performance, scheduled for January 9th, could take place electronically at the initiative of Feijóo himself. On December 24, the opposition leader transmitted to the Catarroja investigative court the messages he received from the former president of the Generalitat, Carlos Mazón, on the night of this meteorological phenomenon. According to Feijóo, he did not stop all communication with Mazón and provided everything requested in the December 22 court order, including the text in which Mazón said, “This is going to be a damn disaster,” in reference to the Dana episode. The exchange between the two PP leaders took place between 8:08 p.m. and 9:08 p.m. and 11:29 p.m. According to the information collected by the media, the PSOE has requested that the judge receive all communications, not only the messages from Mazón, but also those written by Feijóo himself.
In this context, the PP leadership emphasizes that it will continue its educational work before society and present its proposals and the changes that will apply from the moment of a possible arrival in Moncloa. The media emphasizes that the pressure on Sánchez’s executive is increasing given the judicial events, the recent media scandals and the electoral data, while the popular leader reiterates his position for elections and an institutional reorganization in the event of a change of government.
