The Court of Instruction Number 2 of Ferrol concluded the investigation procedure in the case of alleged sexual assault against the former maritime councilor of the Xunta de Galicia, Alfonso Villares. According to the Superior Court of Xustiza of Galicia (TSXG), the judge decided not to prosecute Villares, declared the summary concluded and submitted the case to the Provincial Court, which is the body that must confirm or revoke his case.
Villares resigned from his position at the beginning of June after learning that the TSXG had decided to investigate him for a matter that, during this brief appearance which ended to the applause of his team, he limited “to the personal sphere”. Subsequently, the president of the Xunta, Alfonso Rueda, admitted that he had learned of the complaint four months earlier, in February, when the police called the then councilor to testify. According to Rueda, just days before the resignation, the higher court questioned the Galician government about Villares’ status as a citizen and that’s when the decision to leave office was made. He did so between the accolades of the head of the regional executive, who wished to be able to “recover him for public life”, and the unanimous support of his cabinet colleagues with practically identical messages on social networks.
Villares, 55, was one of Rueda’s closest advisors, with whom it was common to see him sharing bike rides. A veterinarian by profession – after leaving office he returned to work at the Xunta, with a destination close to his home that the CIG union denounced as “favorable treatment” – Villares was elected mayor five times by an absolute majority in Cervo, in A Mariña Lucense. In the last one, he did not even have time to take office: Alfonso Rueda called him to replace Rosa Quintana, the oldest member of the Feijóo government, at the head of the Ministry of the Sea, who held this position since his arrival at the leader of the PP.
