To facilitate travel between IndyCar and the Formula 1THE International Automobile Federation (FIA) increased the number of points available to competitors in the single-seater category in the United States. It is expected that more drivers will be able to travel between the two competitions.
The super license functions like a “driving license” and is mandatory for anyone wishing to enter Formula 1. Under current regulations, to obtain the document, the driver must obtain 40 ranking points over a period of three years.
Currently, only the IndyCar champion receives this amount in one go, with 30 points going to the runner-up.
After revising the rules, the FIA will award more points to those finishing between third and ninth place from 2026. According to the federation, the change should reflect the growing importance of the category.
Currently, Formula 1 does not have an American driver on the grid, although the sport is increasingly popular in the country, with three races and the entry of Cadillac next season as the 11th team and the only American representative on the starting grid.
The changes to the guidelines come after Colton Herawinner of nine IndyCar races, leaves category to race Formula 2 the next year, while he was a test driver for Cadillac.
Despite the high number of victories in the category, Herta did not achieve enough points for its super license. With the category change, the driver would be closer to reaching the limit needed to obtain the document. Despite this, the project has sparked debate within the motor racing community about the accessibility of Formula 1.
In an interview with the site motorsport.com, Tony Kanaanhead of McLaren Arrowspoke about FIA news: “It’s good news for IndyCar and good news for the drivers in the series if they want to race in F1”he said.
“An IndyCar driver should not need to move to a lower series to prove they have what it takes to compete in another series”he concluded.
