Filmmaker and actor Rob Reiner and his wife were found dead in their Brentwood mansion in Los Angeles, Southern California, US media reported on Sunday. The discovery of two dead people at the residence of Reiner, the director of films such as “The Princess Bride,” “Harry and Sally” and “A Question of Honor,” was reported by local NBCLA television and other media outlets.
The NBC network later quoted a source close to the family as saying the couple had been found dead, apparently with stab wounds. The 78-year-old American actor, director and producer and his wife Michele Singer were apparently stabbed, Variety magazine also reported. Los Angeles police did not confirm the victims’ identities but said they were investigating the case.
Murder investigation
“No one has been arrested, no one is being questioned as a suspect,” said Los Angeles Police Deputy Chief Alan Hamilton. “I will not confirm whether anyone is being questioned or not at this time. We will try to speak to as many family members as possible,” he added.
Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass also assured that an investigation was underway. “I am saddened by the tragic loss of Rob and his wife Michele. I knew Rob and have great respect for him,” she said. “An acclaimed actor, director, producer, author and political activist, he has always used his gifts in the service of others,” he added.
Messages from politics and the cinema world
Prominent politicians, actors and other artists were also moved by the director’s death this Monday (December 15, 2025) and showed how respected he was in Hollywood. “Michelle and I are heartbroken over the tragic deaths of Rob Reiner and his beloved wife Michele. Rob’s achievements in film and television gave us some of our most treasured stories on screen,” former President Barack Obama wrote on X.
For her part, former US Vice President Kamala Harris noted: “Rob Reiner’s work has influenced generations of Americans. The characters, dialogue and images he brought to life in film and television are present in our culture.” And California Gov. Gavin Newson, a Democrat, said he was heartbroken when he heard the news: “Rob was the big-hearted genius behind so many of the classic stories we love.”
“I’m at a loss for words,” actress Roseanne Barr said online. James Woods, who starred in “The Ghosts of Mississippi,” directed by Reiner, mourned the loss of his “good” friend. “Political differences have never hindered our mutual love and respect,” he said in X.
