Former President Jair Bolsonaro (PL) will be operated on for a bilateral inguinal hernia starting at 9 a.m. this Thursday (25/12), Christmas Day, at the DF Star Hospital, in Brasilia (DF). The procedure is expected to last approximately four hours and take place under general anesthesia.
Bolsonaro was admitted around 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday (12/24) to undergo pre-operative examinations. According to the medical team, he underwent clinical, laboratory, cardiological and surgical risk assessments, being deemed fit for the procedure.
This will be the eighth surgery undergone by the former president, since he was the victim of a stabbing during the 2018 electoral campaign, in Juiz de Fora (MG).
“DF Star Hospital informs that former President Jair Messias Bolsonaro was admitted to undergo bilateral inguinal herniorrhaphy. He underwent preoperative examinations, with assessment of cardiological and surgical risks, and was deemed suitable for the proposed intervention,” the note said.
This is the first time that Bolsonaro has left the Federal Police Superintendence (PF) of Brasilia since his arrest on November 22. The transfer to the hospital took place after authorization from Minister Alexandre de Moraes, of the Supreme Federal Court (STF), who also established specific rules for hospitalization. The movement took place under high security.

What is inguinal hernia surgery?
- An inguinal hernia occurs when there is a defect in the abdominal wall that allows internal contents to protrude, usually in the groin area.
- Surgical treatment can be performed using an open technique or a minimally invasive method, depending on medical assessment.
- In both cases, it is common to use mesh to strengthen the abdominal wall and reduce the risk of recurrence.
- The choice of technique takes into account factors such as the clinical condition of the patient and whether general anesthesia is required.
- Bolsonaro remains in detention for the duration of his hospitalization, according to the conditions set by the Federal Court.

Understanding the inguinal hernia surgery that will be performed in Bolsonaro
Hospitalization in isolated area
By court order, the former agent will be hospitalized in an isolated area of the hospital, under permanent surveillance by the Federal Police. The trip was carried out in convoy, with entry through the unit’s garage, to avoid any contact with the public.
Security will be provided 24 hours a day, with at least two federal agents positioned at room doors and reinforced teams inside and outside the hospital. Cell phones, computers and other electronic devices are also prohibited from entering the room, with the exception of medical equipment, to prevent unauthorized communication.
Former first lady Michelle Bolsonaro was allowed to accompany the former president throughout his hospitalization.
Procedure and recovery
The surgical intervention aims to correct a bilateral inguinal hernia, a condition diagnosed by a medical report and confirmed by the expertise of the Federal Police.
The medical team estimates that the length of hospitalization after the procedure varies from five to seven days, depending on the clinical course and postoperative care, such as pain control, physiotherapy and prevention of complications, such as thrombosis.
The medical bulletin also informs that the need for a possible anesthetic block of the phrenic nerve will be assessed throughout the hospital stay, depending on the patient’s postoperative response.
Brasil cardiologist Ramos Caiado reported Wednesday that Bolsonaro was “depressed” and had recurring hiccups.
