Former President Jair Bolsonaro will benefit from a special security regime during his new hospitalization at the DF Star Hospital, in Brasilia, where he will be operated on for a bilateral inguinal hernia. Two Federal Police (PF) agents will be positioned 24 hours a day in front of Bolsonaro’s room. Another team will be responsible for the internal and external security of the hospital.
This Wednesday, police officers will escort the former president in a convoy from the Regional Superintendence of the Federal District to the hospital. The route is approximately four kilometers, covered in 8 minutes. The procedure was authorized by the Minister of the Supreme Federal Court (STF) Alexandre de Moraes, this Tuesday, at the request of the defense of the PL politician.
In addition to assessing the safety of the former president, who is being held in closed custody, agents will ensure compliance with Moraes’ order. The entry of computers, cell phones or “any electronic device” into the former president’s quarters is prohibited. Visits, with the exception of Michelle Bolsonaro and the medical team, must be authorized by the STF Minister.
When contacted, the PF refused to comment on the security plan put in place to escort and keep Bolsonaro in the hospital.
Moraes wrote that the PF must “ensure compliance” with the restriction. The minister added that “the transport and security of the detained person” must be carried out in a “discreet manner” and that Bolsonaro must disembark through the hospital garage.
The last time he was hospitalized, in September, the former president left the DF Star through the front door, where he stayed for about five minutes while his supporters chanted “Bolsonaro back” and “amnesty now.” The scene sparked questions from Moraes to the Federal District Criminal Police, which at the time was responsible for handling the house arrest.
The former president is now incarcerated in a closed regime, in a special cell of the PF superintendence, and under the custody of the corporation. He is serving the STF sentence of 27 years and three months in prison for attempted coup d’état.
The operation was authorized by Moraes, after a federal police investigation revealed the need for medical intervention.
Experts concluded that the former president suffered damage to a nerve in his torso resulting from surgery, which causes frequent hiccups. It is necessary to repair this injured area to stop the hiccups.
An inguinal hernia occurs when part of the intestine or abdominal tissue protrudes through a weak spot or opening in the muscular wall of the groin, forming a bulge.
Bolsonaro will be hospitalized this Wednesday: understand the procedures and next steps
For Moraes, Bolsonaro has “maintained full health treatment conditions at the Regional Superintendence of the Federal Police of the Federal District”, where he is serving the 27 years and three months in prison sentence he received from the STF for attempted coup d’état.
“The defendant is being held in a location absolutely close to the private hospital where he provides emergency health care, even closer than his home – so that there is no harm in the event of a possible need for emergency travel,” the minister wrote.
