Prints by Matisse and Portinari were on display in central São Paulo
Chaotic escape after the flight
The escape of those responsible for the theft, on Sunday morning (7), consisted of abandoning a car, changing the suspects’ clothes and even temporarily throwing some paintings in a corner of central São Paulo, after one of the criminals was frightened by the approach of a vehicle he thought was a police car.
According to São Paulo Mayor Ricardo Nunes (MDB), the cameras of the municipal facial recognition system, Smart Sampa, recorded the entire action, from the theft until the suspects’ arrival at an address where the works were supposed to be hidden.
No work has been recovered to date. Despite the alleged identification of a hideout, security forces are awaiting a search and seizure warrant to inspect the property.
So far, only one suspect has been arrested: Felipe dos Santos Fernandes Quadra, 31, detained in a house in Mooca, East Zone. According to the Civil Police, he had been convicted of theft, theft and drug trafficking, in addition to being known by the nickname “Dirt”.
On the day of the robbery, he was seen talking to the two men who broke into the library and captured three people: a security guard and an elderly couple.
Leaving the library with eight prints by Henri Matisse and five by Cândido Portinari, the thieves went on foot to Vale do Anhangabaú, a few meters from the construction site, where a blue van was waiting for them. The vehicle used in the escape was later abandoned.
