Several teams of firefighters from the Madrid Corps are carrying out work to extinguish a fire that is still active in a slum on Antonio Cabezón Street, in the Fuencarral-El Pardo neighborhood. Samur troops, present on site as a preventative measure, have not yet had to treat any injuries.
The Madrid Emergency Department received the notification around 2:00 p.m. of the fire which broke out in this unsanitary housing area. Twelve fire crews went to the scene to control the outbreak, which presented “a very significant fire load”, according to an emergency spokesperson. The flames spread quickly due to the large accumulation of goods and scrap metal in the colony.
The fire is already under control, the spokesperson adds, but extinguishing it will take time because firefighters will have to remove all the equipment that burned and anything that could cause another similar incident.
Police are investigating the possible causes of the flames.
At the end of November, a similar fire destroyed at least 13 cabins located in Leganés, 10 of which were inhabited, but there were no injuries. In March last year, also in Leganés, several shanty towns intended for various purposes, some semi-open, burned near the M-406, in the industrial zone of Polvoranca, next to the San Nicasio neighborhood. In 2024, on another occasion, a fire in another slum in this municipality affected nine vehicles and injured one man with minor burns and three with inhalation. All have in common that the large accumulation of goods accelerates the spread of flames.
