Every winter, Spain becomes a sort of meeting point for thousands of birds arriving from northern Europe. It’s no coincidence that our wetlands offer food, milder temperatures and respite from what can be very long journeys. These arrivals are part of a natural movement which repeats itself every year and which transforms certain places in the country into perfect places for bird watching.
This journey begins long before the herds cross the sky. Birds respond to changes that dictate their most basic needs, such as day length and food availability. These two signals activate a genetically encoded response, a mechanism that can even vary if the climate changes. This is why some species maintain very marked routes and others adjust their movements according to environmental conditions.
