Before the Intercontinental Cup final against PSG, played this Wednesday (17/12) at 2 p.m. (Brasilia time), midfielder Saúl Níguez declared that Flamengo was bigger than Real Madrid. The Spaniard played for 12 seasons at Los Blancos’ rivals Atlético Madrid.
For the 31-year-old midfielder, what defines one team as greater than another is the fans. He also said that the Spanish team does not have real fans, but rather followers.
“Flamengo is bigger than Real Madrid (in terms of fans). In fact, Real Madrid has no fans. It is famous, yes, for what it has achieved and is known all over the world and, therefore, it has followers. But you go to the stadium and you don’t feel anything. On the other hand, the Maracanã is always packed. Outside, our fans fill the stadium,” the player told Spanish newspaper AS.

“We played in Recife and they had to send us to another stadium otherwise our fans wouldn’t be able to get in. You go to Lima and they fill everything. To say Flamengo are huge is an understatement. The biggest fans in the world. I felt a connection from day one,” he continued.
