This Saturday (12/06) Flamengo departs for Doha, Qatar, aiming to conquer the world. To ensure maximum comfort during the long flight, the club chartered a Boeing 767-300 VIP aircraft from the South African company Aeronexus. The plane, worth more than R$1 billion, is one of the newest and most luxurious aircraft on the market. Rubro Negro’s debut in the Intercontinental Cup will be next Wednesday (12/10), against Mexico’s Cruz Azul.
The choice of the VIP model was not a coincidence. The club wants to avoid excessive fatigue of the athletes during the 18-hour flight. Therefore, the plane, which can carry up to 351 people, was radically modified to accommodate only 96 passengers. All first class seats are covered in leather and fully recline and convert to beds. Therefore, the technical committee hopes that the players will be able to sleep and rest adequately during the two journeys, which may include a technical stop in Accra, the capital of Ghana, to refuel. Flamengo has a rival as a warning
Flamengo’s logistical concern also has a recent history as a warning. Last year, Botafogo players publicly complained about the lack of comfort when traveling to participate in the same tournament. On that occasion, Alvinegro lost their first match to Pachuca 3-0, and fatigue from the trip was suggested to have been a factor. Therefore, Flamengo invested heavily to ensure the team arrived physically fit.
The luxury plane is already well known to Brazilians. The Brazilian national team used the same plane in 2023 to travel to Colombia to compete in the qualifiers. In addition to the beds, the flight offers a wireless entertainment system and individual sockets. The Rio team will participate for the first time in the competition on the 10th, and if it wins, it will face Pyramids (Egypt) on the 13th. Paris Saint-Germain awaits the final match scheduled for December 17th.
