
Japan experienced this Monday a 7.6 magnitude earthquake which shook the north, center and east of the country, including Tokyo, and which led the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) to issue a tsunami warning for waves of up to three meters. Japanese authorities have also asked the population don’t stay near the coast.
The phenomenon occurred at 11:15 p.m. local time (3:15 p.m. Spanish peninsula time) off the coast of Aomori prefecture, in the northeast of the archipelago, with epicenter 50 kilometers deep, according to meteorological authorities.
The first images which circulated on social networks show how many citizens experienced this moment of the earthquake. Among them, a citizen recorded the swinging of the lamp in his house during the earthquake.
The tremors also pushed the authorities to immediately sound the alarms, particularly in the north of the country. The earthquake reached the upper 6th level in Hachinohe City on the Japanese 7-level seismic pile, focusing on the measurement surface agitation and destructive potentialas well as lower level 6 in the towns of Oirase and Hashikami.
After what happened, the JMA activated a security alert tsunami up to 3 meters high for the coasts of Aomori prefecture, neighboring Iwate and the southern tip of the island of Hokkaido, the northernmost of the archipelago, which should arrive after local midnight.
The tsunami warning up to one meter has also been activated for Miyagi and Fukushima prefectures, as well as the southern coasts of Hokkaido, and a minor alert on possible changes in tide levels across the territory’s Pacific coast, where authorities urged the population to move away from the coast. Some of the videos shared also show how alarms sounded in several of these cities.
For the moment, no material or human damage has been reported, although the authorities have urged more than 13,000 people prefectures of Hokkaido, Iwate and Miyagi move to shelters due to tsunami risks. The country’s Prime Minister, Sanae Takaichi, has already given instructions to the government to anticipate the evacuation of residents and provide the necessary information to those concerned about the evolution of the alert.
