Flu infections continue to increase in the Community of Madrid. Cases are already exceeding the epidemiological peak reached during the previous three winters. Since the start of the epidemic three weeks ago, the curve has continued to advance at an accelerated pace. This situation is already reflected in hospitalizations, increasing the pressure by 14.7% compared to the last seven days. Children under 14 years old remain the sector of the population where the greatest number of cases are reported, with an incidence that already rises to a thousand.
The incidence in the region is 275.36 cases per 100,000 inhabitants during week 49 – which ended on December 7, 2025 -, with 19,301 infections (11,429 more than the previous week). Data from the latest epidemiological report from the Community of Madrid reflect an exponential escalation, rising to the current figure of 112.31 cases seven days ago. With current data, the current season will be the one that reaches the highest flu peak, surpassing the data of 2023-2024, where the incidence of 200 cases has not been exceeded. At the same time, this year the epidemic situation is also progressing, where the bulk of infections arrived near the Christmas holidays.
“Children aged 3 and 4 show the highest figures” of infections in primary care, with an incidence of 1,600.30 and 1,431.30 cases respectively. Generally speaking, the incidence of people presenting symptoms in their health centers is 277.77 cases per 100 thousand inhabitants, which is 2.37 times higher than that of the previous week and 6.55 times higher than that of two weeks ago. The group of children under 14 years of age continues to represent the majority of infections at this level of care with a total incidence of 1,081.22 cases.
Compared to the hospital situation, the incidence increased by 14.7% going from 3.39 cases per 100,000 inhabitants to 16.91. Incomes increased considerably among those over 80, with an incidence of 60.53 cases, “a figure 2.08 times higher than that of the previous week”, notes the regional report. Likewise, cases requiring hospitalization among those over 65 increased from 5.99 cases to 19.55 in one week.
Since the epidemiological threshold was exceeded, the Community of Madrid has recommended vaccination as the main prevention measure. To accelerate the pace of vaccination, the Ministry of Health has allowed Zendal Hospital as a walk-in vaccination point for over 18s. Thus, from Monday to Friday, between 8:30 a.m. and 8:30 p.m., patients will be treated as part of the annual campaign which began on October 15. Last week, the Ministry of Health and the autonomous communities approved the joint action plan to control infections, establishing a traffic light system and a set of recommendations based on the severity of the situation.
This protocol establishes the need to adopt measures in a progressive manner according to four epidemiological levels: inter-epidemic, low or medium level, high level and very high level. Having established this scale on the severity of the epidemic, each autonomy must set the criteria to determine when you enter each of these scenarios and start following the established recommendations.
In the event of a declaration of an inter-epidemic situation, social and health personnel are advised to use a mask when they present symptoms. At the low or medium level, the use of this protective measure also extends to contact with vulnerable patients, such as in the oncology department, transplants or in nursing homes. For its part, at the high level, the suggested use of masks is extended to waiting rooms and emergency rooms and the visiting policy in residences will be reviewed. Finally, at a very high level, it is planned to activate extraordinary coordination between the territories and to adopt exceptional measures.
