BUTCH STORES AT THE HIGHEST PRICES IN THE CITY / FUNDPLAT
A monthly report on the price fluctuations of the food basket in La Plata, consisting of butcher, grocery and grocery products, increased by 1.2 percent in November. The FundPlata survey was conducted in the fourth week of November.
The La Plata food basket consists of 26 foods, the selection of which was made taking into account the consumption behavior of the population. The price survey was carried out in 18 companies in La Plata that have the capacity to sell the three items under consideration and covered 13 districts of the city.
The detailed analysis by item showed significant heterogeneity in price variation. The sector that put the most upward pressure on the basket was the butchery sector, which recorded a 6.9 percent increase in November. This was followed by the “Warehouse” category, which had a deviation of 1.2 percent. In contrast, the fruits and vegetables category recorded a significant decline of -15.2 percent, mitigating the overall increase in shopping baskets.
For individual products, some staple foods and staple foods recorded increases that were well above the overall average of 1.2 percent. The products with the largest increases were onions (1 kg) with an increase of 11.9 percent, pork breast (1 kg) with 9.5 percent, chicken (1 kg) with 9.4 percent and special minced meat (1 kg) with 8 percent. Other relevant increases that were above average were sunflower oil (900 ml) at 6.9 percent, roast (1 kg) at 6 percent and sirloin fillet (1 kg) at 4.4 percent. Likewise, black potatoes (1 kg) and butter (200 g) each increased by 3.9 percent, while yogurt (1 liter) increased by 3.5 percent. Increases were also recorded for classic cheese spread (200 g) (2.8 percent), bread (1 kg) (1.7 percent), white egg (1 dozen) (1.6 percent) and wheat flour (1 kg) (1.5 percent).
At the other extreme, the products with the largest price drops were: tomato (1 kg) with a decrease of -51.1 percent, carrot (1 kg) with a decrease of -18.9 percent, orange (1 kg) with -9.2 percent and Creole lettuce (1 kg) with -4.2 percent. Rice (1 kg) also became cheaper, -3.8 percent; the apple (1 kg), -3.5%; Polenta (500 g) -1.9 percent), pasta (500 g) pasta -1.8 percent and sugar (1 kg) -1.0 percent.
By observing the percentage change in La Plata’s food basket over the last year (December 2024 – November 2025), it is found that the interannual inflation of the basket was 24.9 percent. The month of March 2025 marked the highest level of monthly inflation during this period at 3.3 percent, followed by August 2025 at 3.2 percent. The fluctuation of 1.2 percent in November 2025 is at the bottom of the series and is the second lowest record after June 2025 (0.8 percent).
The FundPlata report clarifies that La Plata’s food basket cannot be directly compared to the CPI basket, as the latter is more comprehensive. However, comparing both quantities allows us to obtain a pattern of the evolution of food prices in general and certain products in particular.
