São Paulo City Council will invest R$37.5 million in public resources in year-end actions. Management pays special attention to Christmas, which, according to management, has not received an investment of this size for at least ten years.
The stated goal is to surpass Gramado (RS), says Culture Minister Toto Parente. “They are still the great symbol of Christmas in Brazil.”
It is estimated that investments in year-end programs – Christmas, the São Silvestre Race, and New Year’s Eve – will generate an impact of R$2 billion on the city’s economy. The calculation was made by the FGV (Fundação Getulio Vargas), at the request of the municipality’s Ministry of Culture.
Toto Parente says the city has expanded its Christmas program with attractions in the centre, in 32 sub-prefectures and in all cultural facilities of the administration.
It also highlights a network of 32 free municipal cinemas in the suburbs, which will be showing Christmas content during this period. According to him, São Paulo is able to compete for the leading role in the year-end calendar.
The strategy builds on the city’s existing infrastructure. “We have logistics services, thousands of hotels and a unique cultural market,” he says.
It also highlights that the expected economic impact takes into account the entire chain involved in the events. “You count everything: the taxi driver, the app driver, the waiter, the restaurant, even the shoe shine,” he says.
FGV will monitor the period on an ongoing basis, with combined results released on January 2.
New Year’s Eve in the city will also have an expanded list of attractions. The New Year’s Eve stage will host Ana Castilla, Mayara, Marisa and João Gomez. “Our lineup this year won’t be the envy of any New Year’s Eve,” Parente says. “We’re bringing in artists that speak to people.”
