Summary
Filipe Martins, former advisor to Bolsonaro, was placed under house arrest by the STF, accused of participation in a coup attempt; he was already wearing an electronic ankle bracelet and the decision aims to prevent further escapes by those involved.
The former international advisor to the presidency of former President Jair Bolsonaro, Filipe Martins, was placed under house arrest by the Minister of the Supreme Federal Court (STF) Alexandre de Moraes this Saturday 27. Filipe is to be imprisoned at his home in Ponta Grossa (PR). The information was revealed by the former advisor’s defense on social networks.
Martins’ arrest was ordered after Silvinei Vasques attempted to escape. On a social network, Jeffrey Chiquini, Filipe Martins’ lawyer, said that federal police agents were complying with an order from Moraes that would have ordered Filipe Martins’ house arrest. He called the measure taken against Bolsonaro’s former adviser “absurd” and said the defense would appeal.
Moraes’ decision was motivated by a desire to prevent the escape of others convicted of the coup plot. Silvinei’s escape attempt failed and he was arrested at an airport in Paraguay. He is expected to be transferred to Brasilia this Saturday.
The PF went to Filipe Martins’ home to inform him of the decision. He already wore an electronic ankle bracelet and was allowed to leave the house during the day. Today, this measure has been repealed.
Martins was sentenced to 21 years in prison for attempted coup d’état by the first chamber of the Federal Court (STF), during a trial held on December 16.
Other convicts who are still not serving a prison sentence because they have not exhausted their appeals will be notified this Saturday 27.
Core 2
The PF operation at Martins comes a day after the arrest of the former director of the Federal Highway Police (PRF) of the Bolsonaro government, Silvinei Vasques, in Paraguay, while he tried to flee, with false papers, to El Salvador.
Filipe and Silvinei are part of the so-called “core 2” of the coup plot. According to the complaint from the Attorney General’s Office (PGR), the group was responsible for managing the main initiatives of the criminal organization that tried to carry out a coup d’état, now in power Jair Bolsonaro.
Among the initiatives cited by the PGR are the use of police forces to keep former President Jair Bolsonaro in power, the coordination of surveillance actions of public authorities, dialogue with leaders linked to the acts of January 8, 2023, when the headquarters of the Three Powers were invaded and vandalized, and finally, the preparation of the coup d’état project, a document that would implement the measures in the country.
