The left rear Mario Pineidaaged 33, was murdered in Guayaquil, Ecuador, this Wednesday 17. The player, who defended the Barcelona from Guayaquilplayed for Fluminense in 2022. The information was confirmed by the Ecuadorian club in a statement on social media.
According to the Ecuadorian site Ecuavisalocal police said Pineida was shot dead outside a butcher shop in the Sanales neighborhood. Additionally, the athlete’s wife was also killed in the attack. Pineida’s mother, who was with the couple, was injured.
Also according to the Ecuadorian website, a few hours before the attack, Antonio Álvarez, president of Barcelona de Guayaquil, reportedly said that a player on the team had requested special protection after receiving death threats. It should be noted that this Wednesday, the team’s players did not train either due to four months of unpaid salary.
On social networks, Barcelona de Guayaquil released a statement and deplored the death of the athlete.
“The Barcelona Sporting Club informs, with deep regret, that it has been officially informed of the death of our player Mario Pineida, which occurred after an attack against him. This unfortunate news deeply saddens us, as well as all those who are part of the institution, and leaves us in mourning as a Barcelona family. In the coming hours we will inform in due course of the acts that will be carried out in his memory. For now, we ask our members, supporters and public opinion to raise prayers for the rest of his soul and to give strength to his entire family in this moment of immense pain,” the club wrote in X.

Fluminense also took to social media to issue a statement of solidarity with the left-back’s friends and family.
“The Fluminense Football Club received with deep regret the news of the death of Mario Pineida, an athlete who played for the club in 2022. Pineida arrived at the Tricolor at the start of the season in which together we became champions of Rio. Fluminense expresses its solidarity with his family and friends,” wrote the official account of the Rio team on X.

In addition to defending Fluminense and Barcelona de Guayaquil, Pineida played for El Nacional and Independiente del Valle and received call-ups for the Ecuadorian national team. Throughout his career, he won the Ecuador Championship in 2016 and 2020 with the Guayaquil team, the Carioca Championship with the Tricolor team in 2022 and the Ecuador Cup with El Nacional in 2024.
