Lisbon, December 13 (EFE). – Portuguese lawyer Paulo Abreu dos Santos, former deputy to former Justice Minister Catarina Sarmento e Castro (2022-2024), was remanded in custody this Saturday on the order of a judge for alleged pedophilia crimes, CNN Portugal television reported.
The channel was the first to report on this case, which was also confirmed by the Lusa news agency.
According to CNN Portugal, Abreu dos Santos was arrested by the Criminal Investigation Department’s Cybercrime Combat Unit in collaboration with the Public Prosecutor’s Office for allegedly committing hundreds of crimes of child pornography and child sexual abuse, which he committed himself and which he filmed with a mobile phone.
The network added that the suspect accessed videos containing pornographic depictions of minors from his office in the Ministry of Justice, where he worked between 2023 and 2024, during the government of Socialist Prime Minister António Costa.
According to CNN Portugal, the 38-year-old lawyer was arrested red-handed in a house and was in possession of all the files incriminating him.
After his arrest this week, he appeared before a judge on Saturday who ordered preventive detention. EFE
