Neurosurgeon Paulo Niemeyer Filho operated on Wednesday afternoon at Copa Star Hospital in Copacabana on former governor Moreira Franco, 81, who remains hospitalized. He is doing well after the procedure and should be out in the next few days.
Born in Piauí, he built his political career in Rio, a state he administered between 1987 and 1991. He also served as Minister of Mines and Energy (MME) and Chief Minister of the General Secretariat of the Presidency of the Government of Michel Temer, in addition to having commanded the Civil Aviation Secretariat and the Strategic Affairs Secretariat under Dilma Rousseff.
Moreira Franco recently published her memoirs, based on the testimonies of sociologist Aspásia Camargo. Published by Topbooks, the work recalls notable figures from his public life, such as Senator Amaral Peixoto – his father-in-law – and Leonel Brizola, who beat him in the race for governor of Rio in 1982.
