Paris, December 14 (EFE). – France asked this Sunday to postpone the signing of the trade agreement between the European Union and Mercosur, scheduled for December 20 in Brazil, and to continue negotiations on “legitimate” protection measures for European agriculture.
“In this context, with the Mercosur summit scheduled for December 20, it is obvious that the conditions for a vote in the EU Council on authorizing the signing of the agreement are not present,” French Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu said in a statement four days before the last meeting of EU leaders this year in Brussels.
And he added: “France can only make a final declaration based on concrete, precise and operational elements, not on mere announcements. Therefore, France calls for a postponement of the December deadlines so that work can continue and legitimate protective measures are guaranteed for our European agriculture.” EFE
