Elton Panamby is an artist who integrates body, sounds and presence into his performances as an extension of the meaning of words. “Abissal” and “Consanguíneas Transcriptions”, two of his presentations, take place this Wednesday (10) and Thursday (11) respectively, at 7:30 p.m., in the Technologies and Arts room (4th floor) of Sesc 24 de Maio, with free entry and password recovery from 30 minutes before the shows.
Immersive, the two performances provide sensory and interactive experiences. The first, “Abyssal,” which takes place on Wednesday, features a song of “tongues of water” that takes the audience into a diving state, guided by layers of voices, frequencies, vibrations and sounds produced with water in different states.
In glass aquariums, Panamby plays, captures and modulates sounds in real time, projecting waters into space using lanterns and dialoguing with processes of collective mourning and care. Meanwhile, an ice sculpture, shaped like the artist’s head, melts during the performance and drips onto one of the aquariums.
The soundscape is expanded with the use of the didgeridoo, an ancient Australian Aboriginal wind instrument, as well as the mouth berimbau, a musical instrument formed by a string stretched between the ends of a bow, usually made of wood. Alongside these instruments, contact microphones capture the vibrations of the artist’s neck and body. The audience is invited to sit or lie on the ground, barefoot, to allow the frequencies to pass through the entire body.
The second rendition, “Consanguine Transcriptions,” features a reading performed by Panamby in which words are inscribed on the artist’s back by tattoo artist Filipe Espindola, who uses an inkless tattoo machine, transforming the body into a soundscape through friction, vibration and memory. The words appear on the skin, scarified, creating a text which is born from the confrontation between the word, the sound, the pain and the listening.
The performance is constructed as a sound body: layers of voices, looped noises, tattoo machine sounds captured by contact microphones and audio from the artist’s loved ones transform the space into an environment of tension and memory.
Born in the southern suburbs of the city of São Paulo, Panamby lived for six years in Rio de Janeiro and São Luís (MA). Artist graduated in Communication of Body Arts from the PUC-SP and holder of a master’s degree and a doctorate in arts from the postgraduate program in arts of the UERJ, the artist has been developing work in several languages since 2008, devoting himself to research and creation based on the psychophysical limits linked to body modification practices in ritual experiences, apparitions, figures and faces.
Panamby began generating sounds as a poetic practice of darkness, primarily from 2015, as an attempt to touch the invisible and communicate in other languages. In 2024 he released his first book, “Cavalo Bípede”, followed by “Futuro Soprando Atrás da Nuca”, both published by Borboleta Azul.
This is, to say the least, an unprecedented opportunity to experience two performances that must be seen and felt by those who expect more than just to hear the art of collecting sounds, because “Abyssal” and “Consanguíneas Transcriptions” are experiences that go beyond conventional listening.
