The day before the death of Rob Reiner – who was found dead at his home alongside his wife, actress and photographer Michelle Singer Reiner, both of whom had been stabbed – comedian Eric Idle had a long telephone conversation with the filmmaker. For more than an hour, the two men discussed and exchanged ideas about their future plans, as the comedian revealed this Monday (15), while he mourned the loss of his friend, victim of a crime whose main suspect is his son Nick Reiner.

In recent months, Rob Reiner participated in the completion of the trilogy formed by the films “This is Spinal Tap” (1984) and “Spinal Tap II: the end continues” (released in American theaters in 2025). To complete the sequence of satirical feature films about an English heavy metal band – in productions with documentary language – the director developed “Spinal Tap at Stonehenge: the final finale”, with appearances by Eric Clapton, Shania Twain and Josh Groban.

“Rob Reiner was a lovely man,” Eric Idle wrote on social media. “I spoke to him last night for over an hour. He was telling me about filming at Stonehenge and his thoughts for the future,” he said. “It’s so terrible. I’m going to miss him so much. An intelligent, talented and very sensitive man.”
Trailer for Rob Reiner’s new film
Scheduled to debut in US cinemas in 2026, “Spinal Tap at Stonehenge: The Finale Finale” was filmed in August this year and shows the protagonist band performing their first and final show at the historic rock landmark in England. Check out the trailer released by the producer below.
Stonehenge is a fundamental element of the original film, a production that brought together fans around the world in the 1980s and in which the band plays the song “Stonehenge” around a small model of the historic monument, measuring just 45 cm. The song reappears in the sequel, this time with the help of Elton John and with a much larger storyline, as reported by the American press in recent months.
Son suspected of murder
The investigation by the Los Angeles Police Department’s (LAPD) Robbery-Homicide Division names Nick Reiner, 32, as the main suspect in the murders of his parents, filmmaker Rob Reiner, 78, and actress and photographer Michelle Singer Reiner, 68.

The couple was found dead last Sunday (14), in the mansion where they lived in Los Angeles, United States, with injuries consistent with a stab wound. Firefighters and police were called, but both were already dead when crews arrived on scene.
According to “People” magazine, Nick is one of three children of the director, known for films such as “Harry and Sally – Made for Each Other” (1989), “Stand by Me” (1986) and “A Matter of Honor” (1992). However, his personal trajectory was already a subject of public concern years before the crime. At the age of 15, he was admitted to a rehabilitation clinic for the first time – the first of 17 admissions recorded until 2016, when he gave an interview describing his struggle with drug addiction.
At that time, when he was 22 years old, Nick was promoting the film “Being Charlie” (2015), directed by Rob Reiner and co-written by him. The work dramatizes his own youth marked by addiction and attempts at recovery. In the film, the role inspired by Nick was played by actor Nick Robinson, known for “Jurassic World” (2015).
The eventful story returned to the forefront after the publication of the case by the website “TMZ”, which reported that the Reiner couple had been found injured by a sharp weapon. The identity of the victims was only later confirmed by People sources, who also named Nick as a suspect. The police, for the moment, are continuing the investigation and have not officially released the arrests, interrogations or motivations.
