Authorities in Germany announced on Saturday (December 13, 2025) that they had arrested five men on suspicion of involvement in an Islamist attack on a vehicle at a Christmas market with the intent to kill and injure people.
An Egyptian, three Moroccans and a Syrian were arrested on Friday in connection with the attack plan in the southern state of Bavaria, prosecutors and police said in a statement.
The 56-year-old Egyptian is said to have called from a mosque to carry out the attack on a market in the Dingolfing-Landau district, “killing or injuring as many people as possible with a vehicle,” the statement said.
High alert due to risk of attack
The Moroccans, aged 30, 28 and 22, allegedly agreed to carry out the attack while the 37-year-old Syrian encouraged them to do so.
Investigators suspect “Islamist motivation” in the plan. All suspects were arraigned in court on Saturday and remain in custody.
German authorities are on high alert for possible attacks on Christmas markets.
Last year there was a car attack at a market in the city of Magdeburg that left six people dead and hundreds injured.
