The Chamber of Deputies approved this Wednesday (10/12) the six-month suspension of federal deputy Glauber Braga (PSOL-RJ), who escaped the request for revocation of his mandate.
Braga was responding internally for violation of decorum after pushing and kicking, in April last year, a member of the Movimento Brasil Livre (MBL), Gabriel Costenaro.
An amendment proposing suspension instead of revocation of the mandate was proposed by the Workers’ Party (PT). The lightest sanction received the support of 318 MPs. There were also 141 votes against and 3 abstentions.
Tuesday (12/09), the PSOL deputy was one of the protagonists of a tense day in the House.
He occupied the Board of Directors of the House, to protest against the advancement of representation that jeopardized his mandate and against a bill that reduced the sentences of those convicted of involvement in coup acts, including former President Jair Bolsonaro (PL).
The deputy complained that he was injured in the arm when he was taken away by the officers.
“I will stay here calmly, in complete tranquility, exercising my legitimate political right not to accept as a fait accompli the amnesty for a group of putschists, reducing Bolsonaro’s sentence to two years, maintaining the same political situation, maintaining the political rights of Eduardo Bolsonaro… And generating for me, who made this confrontation, eight years of eligibility,” declared the PSOL deputy, still a member of the Board of Directors.
The representation against Braga was presented by the Novo party.
In April, the Chamber’s Council of Ethics and Parliamentary Decorum approved the opinion of deputy Paulo Magalhães (PSD-BA), rapporteur of the file, calling for the dismissal of the PSOL parliamentarian. There were 13 votes for the revocation and 5 against.
Glauber Braga’s supporters argued at the time that impeachment would be disproportionate to what happened.
The attack on the MBL member was filmed.
The PSOL deputy defended himself by claiming that he was being persecuted by Costenaro, who had offended the parliamentarian’s mother.
In April, Braga began a nine-day hunger strike to protest the Ethics Council’s decision.
On Tuesday, the President of the House, Hugo Motta (Republicanos-PB), announced that the impeachment requests of Braga, Carla Zambelli (PL-SP) and Alexandre Ramagem (PL-RJ) would be analyzed.
Zambelli and Ramagem were convicted by the Federal Supreme Court (STF) — she for violating the National Council of Justice (CNJ) system and he for participating in a coup plot following the 2022 elections, when Jair Bolsonaro (PL) was defeated at the polls by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT).
Zambelli’s impeachment request is expected to be voted on by the House on Wednesday.
