The proposal was approved by the Senate and goes up to presidential sanction
BRASÍLIA – The Minister of Institutional Relations, Gleisi Hoffmanndeclared on the night of Wednesday 17, that President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) would veto the bill which reduces the sentences of those convicted on January 8. The proposal was approved by the Senate and will be submitted for presidential approval.
“President Lula will veto this plan. Those found guilty of attacks on democracy must pay for their crimes,” Gleisi said on X (formerly Twitter).
The minister also criticized the performance of the government leader in the Senate, Jacques Wagner (PT-BA), to the Constitution and Justice Commission (CCJ). THE approval of the text in collegial a few hours before the vote in plenary, after an agreement between the government and the opposition, which made it possible to analyze the project later this year.
“The handling of this issue by government leaders in the Senate at the CCJ was a regrettable error, contrary to the government’s guidance which was contrary to the initial proposal,” Gleisi wrote.
The reduction of the sentences handed down against Jair Bolsonaro and other putschists, approved this evening in the Senate, is a lack of respect for the decision of the STF and constitutes a serious setback in the legislation which protects democracy. Previously, Jacques Wagner took responsibility and declared that he had reached an agreement without consulting Gleisi and the president. He says the agreement was only on a “procedural” issue, so the proposal could be voted on this year, and not on the content of the text.
