Minister of Institutional Relations Gleisi Hoffmann said the government would vote against the bill which reduces the sanctions applied by the STF (Supreme Federal Court) to those found guilty of attempted coup d’état.
The President of the Chamber of Deputies, Hugo Motta (Republicans), decided that the project should be voted on this Tuesday (9) in plenary. According to Motta, there have been no conversations with Senate President Davi Alcolumbre (União Brasil-AP) regarding when the House might vote on the project.
“The project contradicts a decision in which the STF and Brazil demonstrated their independence and sovereignty, in addition to weakening legislation that protects democracy against future coup attempts,” he wrote on X (formerly Twitter). “The same text which proposes to toughen the progression of sentences for a series of crimes grants an advantage to political criminals already convicted.”
Gleisi called the project a setback and said a political arrangement cannot weaken the country’s legislation.
Motta’s decision to lead the vote comes two days after Senator Flávio Bolsonaro (PL-RJ), who is running for president of the Republic, announced that the price of abandoning his candidacy would be approval of an amnesty and that his father, Jair Bolsonaro (PL), could run next year – the former president is not eligible. In an interview with LeafFlávio returns and says his candidacy is irreversible.
