The forced dismissal of deputy Glauber Braga (PSOL-RJ) from the presidency of the Chamber triggered an immediate movement by government parliamentarians against Hugo Motta (Republicanos-PB), accused of having lost the conditions to continue leading the Chamber.
Under threat of impeachment for violating decorum, Glauber occupied the presidential chair for about an hour. Legislative police were called and forcibly removed him, amid unrest and reports of attacks on lawmakers. The Council then restricted access to the plenary, expelling journalists and advisors, which further soured the atmosphere.
Later, when the session resumes. Rank-and-file parliamentarians delivered tough speeches, accompanied by unprecedented public criticism.
The person who opened the reaction was the leader of the PT, Lindbergh Farias (RJ):
— Your Excellency loses the conditions to continue to exercise the presidency of this Chamber.
In the same spirit, Tarcísio Motta (PSOL-RJ) declared that the president “is not able to preside over the Chamber”.
Erika Kokay (PT-DF) accused Motta of violating her own rules by suppressing the press:
— There was violence against the parliamentarians we are currently dealing with, carrying the violence propagated by Your Excellency. You need to rethink your attitude.
Upon leaving the plenary, Glauber spoke briefly to the press, accompanied by MP Sâmia Bomfim (PSOL-SP) and PSOL allies. He then went to a doctor.
Previously, he said he would remain “at the limit of his strength” and criticized what he called the Council’s different treatment of Bolsonaro supporters who occupied the board in 2023.
The government is trying to postpone dosimetry
The confusion comes on a busy and sensitive day for the Palácio do Planalto. The government is trying to postpone the session aimed at withdrawing the dosimetry project from the vote, after the rapporteur Paulinho da Força (Solidariedade-SP) declared that the text could reduce the sentence of former president Jair Bolsonaro to two years and three months in a closed regime.
On the other hand, a point considered a priority for the Executive is on the agenda, the persistent debtor project, also scheduled for today. Government officials are prepared to shelve this proposal, which is a budget priority for the Treasury, in a sign of support for Glauber and in favor of delaying dosimetry.
