With the forecast of further rain showers in São Paulo and the metropolitan area, Enel has again recorded an increase in the number of properties without electricity. On the afternoon of this Wednesday (17), at 1:40 p.m., according to the dealership, 53,362 customers were without electricity, which corresponds to 0.62% of the total units served. In the capital São Paulo alone, there were 31,362 properties in the dark, or 0.54% of the concession area.
The new increase comes a week after the passage of an extratropical cyclone last Wednesday (10), which caused winds exceeding 98 km/h, toppled trees and damaged sections of the electricity network. At the height of the crisis, around 2.2 million properties were without power across the concessionaire’s service area.
The situation only began to be considered “normalized” on Sunday (14), after four days of power cuts. But since then, the company has experienced frequent fluctuations in supply, a scenario that could worsen given new rain forecasts. This afternoon, for example, in the space of a few minutes, the number went from 48,000 homes without power to 53,000 today.
Enel is responsible for energy distribution in 24 municipalities in the São Paulo metropolitan region, serving approximately 8.5 million customers.
Enel’s delay in restoring service was once again used as an instrument of political pressure by the Municipality of São Paulo and the state government, which began directing criticism to the federal government. The crisis gave rise to a meeting between the Minister of Mines and Energy, Alexandre Silveira, Governor Tarcísio de Freitas (Republicans) and Mayor Ricardo Nunes (MDB), at the Palácio dos Bandeirantes.
After the meeting, the minister announced that he would ask the National Electric Energy Agency (Aneel) to open an administrative procedure to evaluate the expiration of the Enel São Paulo contract.
