María Guardiola does not achieve her goal of obtaining an absolute majority in Extremadura to stop depending on Vox, as she sought with the advancement of the elections to this Sunday. With 79% of the votes counted, the PP won with 29 deputies, one more than in 2023.
The PSOE is the second force but would obtain the worst result in its history by losing 10 seats and keeping only 18. In the elections two years ago, the Socialists were the first force in terms of votes and tied with the PP with 28 seats, very far from those obtained this evening.
Vox is the political force that is growing the most this 21D and manages to double the result of 2023. If then it obtained 5 seats, it now obtains 11, or six more. The growth of the far right is very noticeable in rural areas of the region where the PSOE used to win. And Unidas por Extremadura is also growing from four two years ago to seven.
This Sunday, 890,985 people were called to the polls in Extremadura, which, for the first time, brought forward the elections since the restoration of democracy after Guardiola’s Council failed to approve the budgets due to Vox’s refusal to support them. In these elections, as in previous occasions, 36 deputies were elected for the province of Badajoz, the most populous, and 29 for the province of Cáceres for the Assembly of Extremadura.
One of the unknowns of the day was participation, given that the elections also took place in the middle of Christmas. And according to all the figures offered throughout the day, the influx of Extremadurans to the polls has decreased considerably.

Extremadura is one of the oldest communities in Spain and the one with the largest active population in sectors such as agriculture or livestock. In fact, one of the keys to the day is the gap between the countryside and the city. Participation rates fell overall, but the decline was particularly notable in small towns and rural areas.
The main issues that concerned parties during the campaign were infrastructure, with widespread demand for improved rail transport and connections in the region.

Improving public services or social rights was also on the table. The left has warned of the risk of losing them with a growth of Vox like the one which has finally been confirmed. The far right has also managed to introduce the issue of immigration into the debate in Extremadura with its usual xenophobic proclamations, even though the region has the fewest migrants in all of Spain.
